TALL TEXANS – ADDITIONS

The last NETLS U&I listed seven NETLS area librarians selected for the TALL Texans Class of 2010 – our apologies and congratulations go also to Libby Holtmann, Plano Public Library Manager and Amy Pittman-Hassett, William T. Cozby Public Library. (Hmm, they work in NETLS, do they live in the NETLS region?)

Seven NINE of the 24 participants in the TALL Texans Class of 2010 work in the NETLS region. The Texas Accelerated Library Leaders Development Institute is June 13 -17 at the Montserrat Retreat Center in Lake Dallas.

IT’S A MALL WORLD – Or is it?

If your library has/had a library in a mall or shopping center location we want to know. TSLAC is hoping to compile information on the various reasons for locating a library branch in a shopping mall, the pros and cons of housing a library branch in a shopping mall, and the general statistical information on library card memberships, materials circulation, etc.

In the spirit of the 23 Things program, Wyoming State Library offers their recently completed series of online webinars, Get on the bus, Revving up your reference skills. The webinars are archived so you can access them at your convenience :-) but because they are archived you’ll not be eligible for the prizes offered ;-( nor will you be able to call in to ask questions.

2009 ANNUAL REPORTS – Submit early and retain accreditation

Submit annual reports as soon as possible. TSLAC staff is trying a new review tactic this year: “In the past, we have contacted libraries several times over the course of several months via email, as we analyzed each section of the report. This year, we are trying out a new system that will allow us to contact each library one time with feedback on all sections of the annual report.”


A TECH TIP
Some libraries are changing their domain names from the .tx.us domains to some new name. If this happens in your organization, we ask you to do two things: 1) Provide us your new website/catalog links 2) Change your email address for our mailing lists.

In most cases activity directed to your old domain will be forwarded to the new address for some time. Note that while you may continue to receive mailing list emails, you may not post to the lists from the new address. (This will likely apply to all mailing lists, not just NETLS lists.) Change or check your list address by logging in here, contact us if you need assistance with this.

SPRING IS HERE
Spring is here and so are spring storms. Now is the time to ensure your files are backed up and your computing equipment is plugged into an uninterruptable power supply (UPS) or at least a surge protector.

TLA Poster Presentation

Show movies in your library…
Motion Picture Licensing Corporation *may* be able to offer discounts to interested libraries in the NETLS/NTRLS regions. We need to know which libraries and how many libraries are interested in order to negotiate. Standard umbrella licenses start a $95 a year for libraries with service population up to 10,000, 10,001 – 50,000 cost $150, 50,001 – 100,000 is $200 and up to $250 for libraries serving over 100,000 Licenses are per location, per year. (Note: MPLC is *not* the same business as Motion Picture USA)

Literacy Texas ... reimbursement grants

Apply now to Literacy Texas to be considered for Literacy Volunteer Training Initiative reimbursement of expenses to attend or participate in one of the workshops described below. The Literacy Volunteer Training Initiative is a service objective of TCALL’s Clearinghouse Project, an adult education state leadership activity funded by the Texas Education Agency in collaboration with Texas LEARNS.

To apply for a reimbursement please complete and EMAIL the application to Literacy Texas (debbie.johnson at literacytexas.org) by March 26, 2010. You will be notified by email of the status of your request by March 29, 2010.

Number Sense: Teaching About Parts and Wholes

Teaching students how to use estimation, mental math, benchmarking, and calculators will enhance their conceptual understanding of numbers and what numbers represent. This course focuses on helping adult students develop number sense by addressing two key questions: When is it necessary to have an exact answer, and when is an estimate sufficient? When calculation is necessary, which tool is appropriate to use? College Readiness for Adults: Beyond Academic Preparation!
Course Dates: April 22 to June 9, 2010 (21-hour course)

The overall objective of this course is to assist educators, counselors, administrators and postsecondary partners to better prepare their students for postsecondary education. Together, we will identify, organize, and reflect on the broad array of readiness skills and abilities that adults need to be successful in postsecondary education and training. Then, each of us will consider how to change our practice to incorporate what we have learned. The course was developed and written by Cynthia Zafft, Principal Investigator for the National College Transition Network, World Education.

Reimbursement recipients will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis from among those who are eligible in that their program is nonprofit, utilizes volunteers, and does not currently receive state or federal WIA Title II AEFLA professional development funds. Final decisions are the sole responsibility of the Literacy Texas Board of Directors, subject to review by TCALL Clearinghouse staff

Reimbursement amount is a maximum of $500 of allowable expenses for each attendee from an approved program.

To apply for a reimbursement please complete and EMAIL an application to Literacy Texas at debbie.johnson at literacytexas.org by March 26, 2010. You must register for the workshops and pay all registration fees and expenses. Your program will be reimbursed by TCALL after the conference. Each program will collect expense receipts and submit an invoice to TCALL for reimbursement. You may be reimbursed for registration fees, hotel, travel and food up to the allowable amount. We hope you will participate in one of these events and use this reimbursement to subsidize your program's professional development budget.

Literacy Texas recognizes that programs may experience a certain amount of turnover in volunteers, tutors, and program leaders. If an individual is approved and is later unable to attend, your program may contact Literacy Texas about substituting another individual to represent your program at the conference.

BROADBAND APPLICATION UPDATES

Latest updates to application grant guidance for Personal Computing Centers, released March 1, PCC applications are due March 15.

BTOP/BIP DEADLINE EXTENSION

Applicants who are pursuing broadband stimulus grants intended for building broadband infrastructure received an 11-day extension Tuesday, March 2, for the second and final funding window established by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) and Rural Utilities Service (RUS), the two agencies disbursing $7.2 billion set aside in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for broadband projects. The deadline for infrastructure grants to the NTIA moved from March 15 to March 26. Applications to the RUS are now due March 29. The deadline for grants intended for public computing center and broadband adoption initiatives is still March 15 for both agencies.

I’ve only seen one report and it looks like this approach may streamline things for you – get all the questions at once instead of throughout the spring and summer.

Program for Job Hunters..A Model for Other Libraries?

The Noon Network The Irving Public Library Job Center’s monthly networking opportunity for job seekers continues at noon March 1 at the Central Library, 801 W. Irving Blvd. Attendees are invited to bring their lunches, business cards and to share job hunting tips, leads and interview stories. Program attendance has doubled each meeting since the inception of the program three months ago. Sometimes staff or library users are hindered from using library technology because their computers don’t permit pop-up windows to open. Use these nifty resources to check for the presence of pop-up blockers and instructions on how to turn off the blockers if needed.
