NETLS Updates & Information 2/4/2010

Check this new website for a variety of resources for librarians and the public – dealing with unemployment, getting a job, refreshing computer skills, workshops offered to citizens and the public. Let us know if you are offering training that should be listed or if you know of great resources that should be included.

Feel free to direct your community members to the site.

Be sure to check the “Who we are” section. This is part of the project funded by state funds (SYNG) through TSLAC.

Great feedback from Monday’s “Teaching Computer Skills” workshop.

LOOKING FOR PARTNERS

A NETLS library is exploring a revenue generating program based on running advertisement on television monitors in the library. The project requires that a total of 100 monitors placed by the vendor.

The basic proposal is that they will provide 80% to 100% advertising to the monitors we select and they pay us for impressions-based on foot traffic. We define what advertisers/advertising markets we deem appropriate (no liquor, beer, tobacco for example). We can fill the other 20% with our own promotions and or local advertisers that split the pay with us for the exposure. Entrances, exits, and other high traffic areas will give the biggest bang for the buck; screen size is also a factor.

Libraries could buy the hardware or help sell ad space to local/regional merchants, each of which would raise the library's payback. This is based on 20 screens, traffic of 70,000, and a CPM of $12, all reasonable we think. The range for us looks like this: Year 1 $21,000-35,000 Year 2 $42,000-70,000

To figure out what the potential is for any other libraries the following information is needed: average traffic/library, potential # of screens (average)...that sort of thing.

Email for additional information and area library contact.

Rural Libraries …

This program has been offered in other parts of the country/state and they are trying to gauge interest in North Texas.

A TECH TIP
Sometimes staff or library users are hindered from using library technology because their computers don’t permit pop-up windows to open. Use these nifty resources to check for the presence of pop-up blockers and instructions on how to turn off the blockers if needed.

DID YOU KNOW?

NETLS has funds to help libraries reduce the financial risk of participating in ILL or TexShare card programs.

  • If your library is billed for ILL materials that are lost in transit, work with the other library and delivery service to determine the material is truly lost. If the material is lost, contact us – we may be able to pay some or all of the replacement cost on your behalf.
  • If your library issued a TexShare card to your patron in good standing according to your published policy and that patron fails to respond to both the lending library’s and your library’s attempt to get material returned, contact us. We may be able to assist you with your obligation to compensate the lending library.
